About The Sleeping Prophet |-
The Sleeping Prophet (or TSP) is a name under which i, Patrick Simonds, record and release music. the music of TSP is a fusion of dance, industrial, trip-hop, darkwave, goth, and pop rock. if you've never heard it before or you just have no idea what those genres are, go here to listen to my stuff for free. although it's mainly a solo project, i'll have a few guest musicians appearing on some songs on the new album. i'm not against collaborating with other people on music, and would really like to have a band, but so far that just hasn't worked out...
on a different subject, a lot of people wonder why i called the project 'the Sleeping Prophet'. the phrase came to me one day in high school, and it struck me as interesting so i wrote it down. later, when i had begun making music and needed a name for it, the phrase came back to me. it has some interesting meaning to me. the way i compose is mostly reactive. when i hear music i usually also hear extra melodies playing along with it in my head. the lyrics i write are also a reaction to and a reflection on experiences i've had. however, i've never really been able to fully accept my work, as i've never really been able to accept myself. so to me, a prophet is like the wiseman of the tribe, or one who sees more deeply than most, one who catches things other people miss or fail to recognize. that's kind of how i feel about my reactive style of creativity. but to stick sleeping in front of it to me implies some form of imperfection or ineffectiveness, which reflects how i feel about myself. all this, and it rolls off the tongue, too. however, i'm not the first person to come up with the phrase. some historian or writer used it to label a man named Edgar Caycee, and it stuck. to sum things up, Caycee was purported to have amazing psychic abilities, including the ability to heal incurable illnesses and see into the future. however, as he is a figure of history, and we cannot see his powers demonstrated today, there are a lot of different opinions about the man. to some he's a fraud, to others a miracle. in any case, i really don't know enough about him to have an opinion either way. my point is, i came up with the idea for TSP before i was aware of Edgar Caycee, and there is no real or implied similarity between the two.
